Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued invitations to candidates in the second Express Entry draw of the week. The department issued 4,500 invitations to apply (ITAs) in a category-based selection draw for candidates in STEM occupations. Candidates required a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 491 to be considered.
This was the first draw for candidates in STEM occupations so far this year. Today’s draw follows a general draw from yesterday, April 10. IRCC invited 1,280 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 549, the highest minimum CRS score of any draw in 2024.
The first general draw this year, on January 10, required a CRS score of at least 546 to be considered and general draw scores continued to decrease over the past few months.
The last general draw on March 25 invited 1,980 candidates with a CRS score of 524.
General draws consider candidates from all three Express Entry-managed programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Unlike category-based selection draws, a high CRS score is the main deciding factor in a candidate’s likelihood of receiving an ITA.
With category-based selection, Express Entry applicants may be invited for one of the following six categories:
These draws may act as an advantage for candidates who are already in the Express Entry application pool. So far this year, the average CRS score in category-based draws has been lower than it is for general draws.
For example, of the four category-based selection draws, the highest minimum CRS score was 437, and the lowest was 336.
Later this year, it is expected that IRCC will begin holding draws that target Express Entry candidates on specific attributes rather than a high CRS score. This became possible when Bill C-19 received Royal Assent in June 2022.
In contrast, no general draw so far in 2024 has had a minimum CRS lower than 534..
The Canada Immigration Levels Plan 2022-2024 is out now. There’s a higher target and an apparent drive to catapult immigration to new heights in the latest plan for Canada Immigration and The overall target for immigrants has been set as follows:
Express Entry is a points-based system that manages immigration applications for the three Federal High Skilled programs, which include the: Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program, and Federal Skilled Trades Program. Some PNPs also use Express Entry to invite candidates to apply for a provincial nomination.
If you are eligible for an Express Entry-managed program, you will get a score based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The CRS awards points based on skilled work experience, education, age, official language skills, and other factors.
